Gave my scooter to Goodwill, and it’s kind of heartening to know that the system does still work.

First of all, remember this?

That’s my “Just Go” scooter, which is basically a knock-off of the Razor scooter. It is actually better described as my former scooter, as I donated it to Goodwill last Thursday. I figured, since I’d not ridden it in nearly five years (seriously!), I might as well get rid of it, so someone else can get some good use out of it. Thus I gave it to Goodwill.

Now fast forward to today – Monday. Four days later. Mom alerted me to a message from the JMU Police on the answering machine. They’re investigating a case related to some personal property I may have once owned, and want me to call them back.

So I did. Turns out I heard a very familiar, and also heart-warming, story from the officer. The scooter was sold at Goodwill in Waynesboro, and the person who had bought it noticed the JMU bicycle decal still on there, and my JMU ID number (aka my “PeopleSoft number”) engraved on the bottom of it. So, concerned, they called JMU Police, and they investigated it as a possible larceny. I confirmed that I did donate it to Goodwill. I’m sure if I mentioned riding the scooter around campus during 2000-2001, the officer would have remembered me.

Turns out the scooter was bought by someone with two kids. I hope that they have as much fun with it as I did. It’s kind of heart-warming to think that some kids will be having a lot of fun with the scooter, after I definitely had my share of moments on it. I just hope that they use a helmet.

It also brings back some serious memories! I remember when I got the JMU decal on the scooter, and also when I had my JMU ID number engraved on the scooter. Both were done at a safety program that we had in Potomac Hall in the fall of 2000. I registered it as a bicycle there, and then was going to engrave my ID number on it. So I went to turn the engraving machine on, and it vibrated so fast that I instinctively dropped it. Mecca ended up engraving the numbers on there for me.

It also reminds me of the reason I bought the scooter in the first place. I bought it as a method of transportation, to get across campus fairly quickly (taking the bus for some reason never occurred to me), since Potomac Hall was way the heck on the far edge of campus, across Interstate 81 from everything else.

Still, it definitely is nice that there are still people who look out for each other.
