For the past four days, I’ve been having a little fun with my Facebook friends. I’ve been posting status messages with the phrase “DNA evidence” in it without any explanation, and seeing what kind of responses I get. I chose “DNA evidence” as a phrase as a tribute to the use of DNA evidence as a running joke in six consecutive Strong Bad Emails on Homestar Runner. Then it was all explained in the cartoon DNA Evidence.
All together, I posted four “DNA evidence” status messages:
Ben Schumin is going to have that DNA evidence on the desk by nine!
Ben Schumin is not going to make the 51 bus tonight. The DNA evidence pointed to it.
Ben Schumin wonders what happened to the DNA evidence.
Ben Schumin *sigh*… DNA evidence.
Then the reactions amused me. My coworkers started asking me what the deal was with my mentions of DNA evidence. My father asked about it on the phone. And of course, I got some amusing reactions as comments to the various status messages on Facebook itself:
“What did you do now?”
“What DNA evidence?”
“Exactly.”“I wish somebody would explain the DNA evidence to me.”
“I gotta say, all this talk about DNA evidence has a big EEEEEEEUUUUUWWWWWWW factor!”
I did not respond to any of the comments questioning my mention of DNA evidence. By keeping silent on it, it kept things a little more mysterious. Surprisingly, though, no one got the reference, especially when I lifted one of the DNA evidence lines directly from Strong Bad Email #170. I half-expected to see someone recognize it as being based on a Homestar Runner joke, and comment on it.
My original intention was to make this last a week, but there are only so many ways that one can work “DNA evidence” into a Facebook status and make it seem believable, and it became really hard really fast. So even though I wasn’t able to stretch it out a week, it was still loads of fun.
And I’d especially like to thank my friends, family members, and coworkers for being such good sports, since based on the comments, I know I had a few of them scratching their heads over this! Thanks, everyone. Feel free to pull one over on me any time.
