A new geeky shirt and a 30-minute Metro ride inspire me to have some fun…

Today, I wore my new Power Rangers shirt out for the first time:

This is similar to the Power Rangers shirt that I owned before, except that this new one is a smaller size, and has slightly different styling. I am quite proud to place the old Power Rangers shirt in with my “second tier” clothes. It’s too big for me, which is just as well, because I am getting smaller, after all. Then on different styling, this shirt, unlike the first one, falls victim to an error that many Power Rangers toys and such had: emblems on the center diamond.

Recall for a moment that these are the Power Rangers:

The only Power Ranger from Mighty Morphin Power Rangers who had any sort of emblem on his or her chest was Tommy, as the White Ranger, and that’s because his suit was from Dairanger while the other MMPR costumes were from Zyuranger. And Zyuranger costumes had no emblems on the chests. There were only two instances in MMPR where non-white Rangers had the emblems on their chests. One was the non-canonical first movie, where the Rangers wore costumes inspired by the Zyuranger outfits that were used on the TV show, but had a number of significant differences, including an armor-like appearance, only one diamond on the front and two full diamonds on the back (there are normally two diamonds next to the center one on the front that extend around the suit and meet in the back, and thus two partial diamonds on the front), and gold power coin emblems in the middle of the front diamond. Those initially had the dino coin designs on them, and then were changed for the ninja coins later in the movie. Then the other instance was in MMPR Season 3 with the ninja uniforms – you know, that odd intermediate stage between civilian and morphed, so that they could sneak in a stuntperson while not yet actually having to say, “It’s morphin time!” Those had the gold power coin emblems on the chests of the costumes, but those were the ninja coins. The dino coin emblems were never shown on anyone’s chest in MMPR.

So my shirt has that error in it, incorrectly showing a dino coin in the center diamond. The old shirt was correct in showing a blank center diamond.

Then this evening, I was riding home from work on the Metro, and was kind of bored. I was listening to Randi Rhodes on podcast, but not entirely paying attention to it. I wanted to get a photo of myself in my shirt on the train, and so I pulled out my phone with its front-facing camera (what did we do before the front-facing camera?). And apparently I had more fun than I expected, because I ended up taking 76 photos of myself this evening. And all of them in the style that I call “Hold the camera out and take a picture of yourself”.

Here are a few highlights from the take…

Trying to look all tough in my Power Rangers shirt.

I believe that the facial expression on this one is a little underwhelming compared to the rest of the pose, no?

Giving the peace sign as we make the stop at Takoma station.

This looks like one of those about-the-author photos that you see on the back of books, doesn’t it?

Look at meeeeeeeee!

Kind of that look-into-my-eyes thing.

This photo is probably my favorite out of the bunch. I’m riding up the escalator at Glenmont, with two Red Line trains behind me. The lighting that’s on me is actually coming from the escalator! I liked this photo so much, in fact, that I made it my Twitter pic.

So there you are. I know how to amuse myself. And I do look good in my new Power Rangers shirt, don’t you think?
