Food for thought

First of all, some food for thought regarding the war in Iraq that came in the form of a letter to the editor in the Staunton News Leader, printed here in its entirety:
If the United States military stays in Iraq 10 more days, 10 more months, or 10 more years will the outcome be significantly different? – Tom Long, Mount Solon
I wonder that as well. I personally lean very strongly towards saying that it was never our business to invade Iraq in the first place.
Thought I’d share that.
Meanwhile, I can’t believe I didn’t hear about the protests against global warming until I read about it in the newspaper this morning. I was like, wow. Not much happened for this one in DC from what I could tell on DC Indymedia. I did, however, find the new Climate IMC site. This is an Indymedia site specifically for climate-related news.
Meanwhile, I was talking with a coworker today who was complaining about being at a register too close to the door and getting cold breezes. And no jacket. This particular coworker is a homestarrunner.com fan as well, and so I said, “What would Strong Bad say?” before coming up with an Email on the fly. It went like this:
Dear Strong Bad,
I left my winter coat at home today. What should I do to stay warm while I’m ringing up customers?
Sincereley,
[Name] from Waynesboro
And imagine that in Strong Bad’s voice. And yes, “Sincerely” was misspelled on purpose. And I even told this coworker that I would send it to Strong Bad (which I did when I got home). I think that if it made it to the screen of the Lappy 486, then it would be titled “Winter coat”.
Otherwise, my high-visibility safety vest – the FliteStar vest from Head Lites came on Friday. It looks like this:
I used the flash on the right-side image to show the reflectivity of it. And before you ask, yes, this is the exact same style of safety vest that they use on the Metro. See? On mine, all that’s missing is the blue “WMATA” patch. For my dual use of the vest, I’m going to have two things that will go in that spot, since it is a place for an ID. When I use it for carts at work (which they’ve gotten me to do a bit lately), I’m going to put a Wal-Mart name badge on there. Then when I’m not using it for work-related stuff, I’m going to use a patch of my own design, with my Schumin Web logo on it.
All in all, though, I’m just glad to have my own vest. The store’s cart vests don’t fit right on me, plus everyone and their mother has used them.
And last of all, I got a new monitor for the computer! This is very sweet. You may recall my mentioning that I was drooling over a 19″ LCD flat panel monitor that we sell at Wal-Mart. Well, drool no more. It’s mine. And it’s on my desk and ready to use. So I moved my original 19″ monitor (that came with the computer in 1998) up to the shelf that the small monitor previously sat on. So the old monitor was “demoted” to being my second monitor. Thus my new flat panel monitor is front and center. You would not believe how much this has affected my desk. It looks so clean now, since the old monitor had a big footprint, compared to this one’s tiny footprint. But let me tell you… this thing is SHARP. Very clear images on this thing, and very bright. I’m still getting used to it, but I think that this is the beginning of a beautiful relationship.
So there you go.
