Day of Activism

Introduction
October 2, 2004 was certainly a day for activism in Washington, DC! On October 2, two major protest events were held. The first and larger event was a funeral-style procession from Arlington National Cemetery to the Ellipse, just south of the White House, where marchers carried replica coffins to represent American forces that have been killed in Iraq. The theme was “Mourn the Dead, Heal the Wounded, End the War”.
The other protest was a two-day vigil outside the World Bank headquarters, to urge the cancellation of third world debt. This event concluded with a rally at the vigil site.
By making good use of the Metro, I managed to cover both events, hopping between the two of them. In trying to cover both events, it was a bit disorienting at times to collect all the information, as I had to mentally change gears three different times, going from anti-war to economic policy back to anti-war and finally back to economic policy. This photo set somewhat reflects this disorientation, as I let many photos speak for themselves on this cloudy day. A page of movies from both events rounds out the coverage.
