Shrouded in Scaffolding
Part 2
After a successful daytime photo shoot on September 5, 2013, I returned to the Washington Monument on the evening of November 8 to photograph it in its steel shroud at night.
Unlike most views of the Washington Monument at night during this period, this set shows the shrouded monument lit with the regular lighting, rather than the special lighting used to backlight the scaffolding. While I had attempted to photograph the backlighting in late September, equipment problems made that an unsuccessful attempt. A few days after my unsuccessful nighttime attempt, the 2013 federal government shutdown occurred, which cut off access to many of the areas that I needed to reach in order to be able to get the photos that I wanted.
November 3 was the last night that the scaffolding would be backlit, in order to begin work to remove the scaffolding from around the structure. However, contrary to media descriptions of the lighting change, the monument did not “go dark”. Rather, the regular lighting was returned to service the following night.
