Urban Demolition
In early 2005, 1117 North 19th Street, constructed in 1964, was demolished to make way for Waterview, a mixed-use high-rise development spearheaded by JBG and Trizec Properties that was completed in 2007. On February 9, 2005, with demolition well underway, I walked by with Big Mavica in hand in order to document the project.
Seen in this May 2004 file photo, 1117 North 19th Street is the 12-story brown-and-white modernist style building, next door to the taller RCA building.
In a January 20, 2005 file photo taken from nearby Rosslyn Center, demolition is underway as removal of the exterior curtain wall is underway.
And now, on February 9, 2005, most of the exterior curtain wall is gone, and the interior has been removed.
Approaching the intersection of 19th and Lynn Streets, we find a concrete skeleton surrounded by fences.
The exterior curtain wall is nearly gone, with only a few fragments remaining.
A crane stands nearby.
Looking inside, elevator shaft openings around the building’s concrete core have been boarded up, and the floor slabs are completely bare.
Some elements of the building are still recognizable, such as the canopy over the former entrance marked with “1117”.
Parked adjacent to the work site along Lynn Street, a truck waits.
On the other side of the building, a pile of debris waits to be hauled off.
Along the perimeter fence hang banners for Trizec and The JBG Companies.
The entrance to the building’s parking garage remains intact – for now.
