Slowly but surely, the Christmas season is coming, whether we like it or not, and just so darn early, too. It seems like it wasn’t long ago that we were celebrating Halloween, and now department stores already are saying “Deck them halls and ho ho ho and lots of presents for pretty girls,” to quote Lucy from Peanuts. Still, they really do start early in this whole Christmas-cheer thing. I am a regular Nick-at-Nite watcher, getting my Cosby Show fix, and there’s this commercial that’s been running for at least two weeks for an upcoming Christmas thing over Thanksgiving weekend. It’s set like a Christmas pageant, with one kid dressed up like a burning log saying, “I am yule log!” Another kid is dressed up like a milk carton going, “I am egg nog!” And a last kid is dressed as a window, throws a handful of white powder, and says, “I am fake snow!” It’s cute, but after the 100th time seeing it, it loses its cute factor. Still, it’s not even Thanksgiving yet and the mall Santas are out in force, you can buy fake trees and silvery garland on store shelves, and only 38 more shopping days until Christmas (as of this writing). Is it just me, or does it seem to start earlier and earlier every year? Either I lived an incredibly sheltered childhood, or everyone really did keep a lid on it all until after Thanksgiving. Who knows. Still, all I know is that my friend from Canada has already broken out the Christmas decor, and did so some time ago, too. Amazing how early it starts…
