Yes, everyone, Zane is back. The “Zane” in Zane Showker Hall, that is. For those of you who are not familiar with the reason for my exuberance about the word “Zane” appearing on the sign, here’s what’s up. The building that houses the College of Business at JMU has, since 1991, when it was built, been called “Zane Showker Hall”. The sign in front of the building has reflected this, reading “Zane Showker Hall”. Yes, this is an anomaly – most buildings do not include the first name of the guy they named it after. It’s not “Julian Burruss Hall” – it’s just Burruss Hall. The first name often gets a mention on a plaque inside, but not much else. However, our building is special, as it should be, since we’re business majors in there. But recently, our sign was desecrated. I don’t know what happened to the old black sign over the summer, but this fall, when we returned, the sign was replaced with another black sign, but it read “Showker Hall”. Who knows why it was changed, but when they put in the new purple sign with the university’s new logo on it, it again read “Zane Showker Hall”. I figure that when they replaced the sign, (A) someone accidentally had it made as “Showker Hall”, or (B) they did it deliberately, and people complained. Either way, it’s good to see the “Zane” back in Zane Showker Hall.
